Why is a Chick-Fil-a Sandwich so Controversial?

Chick-fil-a, Bible Study

It’s Chick-fil-a Day!

On July 16th the President and COO of Chick-fil-a, Dan Cathy, was interviewed by K. Allan Blume, of the Biblical Recorder. The interview is an interesting read into the life of a man who is trying to live out the Christian life in the context of the business world, just like his dad, Truett, did. The story was picked up carried by the Baptist Press.

And since then the story has gone viral with every major media outlet in the country picking it up.

Why the controversy?

That’s a great question. The Biblical Recorder didn’t see it coming.  Baptist Press certainly didn’t anticipate it. What happened? What caused Conan O'Brien to tweet “It’s hard to believe that the greatest division in American politics these days is “pro-“ or “anti-Chick-fil-A.”

Dan Cathy had a comment that was culturally challenging. It was really just a small comment, almost a side note to the interview.  Dan Cathy, his family, and Chick-fil-a support “traditional family values.”

K. Allan Bume stated “Some have opposed the company's support of the traditional family.”

We are very much supportive of the family -- the biblical definition of the family unit.

Cathy’s reply? Just what you would expect. "Well, guilty as charged…” “We are very much supportive of the family -- the biblical definition of the family unit. We are a family-owned business, a family-led business, and we are married to our first wives. We give God thanks for that.”

It is pretty hard to read the quote and figure out what was so controversial. Doesn’t Dan Cathy have a right to express his own opinion? This is still America, isn’t it?

The response of the world.

In a short time Mayor Menino of Boston declared that Chick-fil-a was not welcome in Boston.  "The values expressed by the restaurant chain do not reflect the values of Boston." Really? Not to be out done Mayor Emanuel of Chicago soon declared they were not welcome in Chicago either. Soon, San Fransisco joined in. Isn’t that discrimination at some level? Are families still welcome in Chicago and Boston? This is still America, isn’t it?

Soon the cries of boycott and pledges of support filled the air. Everyone it seems has chosen sides. In the heat of the moment everyone seems to be screaming “Are you 'for' or 'against'?”

Our response.

As Christians four things seem to important in our response.

1. Respond

Do something! Pray for Dan Cathy. Use this as an opportunity to engage someone in the gay community in a conversation about God. Talk to your family about tradional marriage.

2. Civility

Or to put it another way, speak the truth in love. Screaming and a poisonous diatribe are unbecoming for a Christian. We must love others, love sinners, and even love our enemies.  Or as your mother said, "play nice".

 3. What does God say about it?

God created marriage. It is His design, His idea. Therefore He is the one that gets to define it. In the beginning He made marriage. Jesus explained it in many places but, just this one will suffice.

Mark 10:6–9

6 “But from the beginning of creation, God MADE THEM MALE AND FEMALE.

7 “FOR THIS REASON A MAN SHALL LEAVE HIS FATHER AND MOTHER,

8 AND THE TWO SHALL BECOME ONE FLESH; so they are no longer two, but one flesh.

9 “What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate.”

In the beginning God created them male and female, and brought the woman to the man and joined them together in marriage.

 4.  Eat at Chick-fil-a

Ok, maybe this is not very spiritual, but they have great food!

Wrapping it up.

Thank God for the Cathy family and their committment to God. They have taken a hard stand and faced a withering, brutal personal attack. Pray for the family.

Regardless of our personal opinions or desires, God makes the call and that is the end of the story. As Christians we have no choice but to stand on the truth of the Word. It matters. God’s opinion is the only one that counts and the place to find that is in Scripture.

You know by now we love telling you about resources available to help you in your walk. In this post we want to recommend two. We have two studies in the 40 Minute series that would be extremely helpful as you enter into the fray.

Check them out. With all of this in the news this is a great time to have a family talk about the values of purity and marriage. Sit down with your family and the Bible. Help them understand what God says about sex and marriage. Do it soon, before someone in the world teaches them to embrace opnion over truth.

Thanks for weighing in on this. I have shared it with my FB friends. I love that you provided some ways to respond. In a time when we see our values being ridiculed and our status as Christians eroding we all need to be called to respond in love, gentleness, humility and a wee bit of humor.

Thanks for the wisdom. We are to speak the truth in love. Jesus promised that the truth will set us free--Hallelujah! We took four of our eighteen grandchildren to Chicks today to celebrate the freedom we still enjoy in our USA.

Thanks for your information. I just got home from my third meal at chick fla today. There was a handful of highschool students outside protesting the appreciation day:) they were painting them selves in gay pride colors. Your right ;) we have to teach our kids the truth while we can :) there are plenty if people anxious to feed them the ways of the world.

Factory farming is a disgrace to both man and God. Animals weren't put on this earth to be tortured. They are in our care, in our trust. The mass slaughter of helpless creatures for the fast food industry just so we Americans can become obese is NOT a family value. No creature on earth is treated worse than a chicken. They are loaded with antibiotics because they live in filth. The runoff from chicken farms is destroying our rivers and lakes. If we cannot take care of the earth, God will take it from us just like a parent would take a precious gift away from a spoiled child.

The world is forever changeing, we must not change with the world, but change our hearts because the world will not last forever. Those whose hearts are stone cold will never change, only God can change them, and only through prayer will He change them. Do not quarrel with a fool, for they will only try to make you see it their way.

Today I bought early Chick-fil-a lunch to take to a friend in a nursing home and I decided to pay $40.00 extra for the people after me to have free meals. It was so much fun to stand in background (while I was waiting for my carryout) and see the surprise on a few faces! What a great place to give Jesus Glory!

I am so amazed at how interesting it is that the USA would so quickly ostracize Chick_Fil-A. Is this not the same country that has a slogan of "IN GOD WE TRUST"? I think this shows us how quickly Christians are becoming the minority in this country. I pray for the Mr Cathy and the Chick-Fil A family and continue to exude love in all aspects of our lives so that others may see God in us.

What atrocities have the organizations, Chik-Fil=A supports? I heard something about Exodus International, but can't find anything on it. This is the biggest argument I am seeing on Facebook.

Thank you for your article. We are fast losing our freedoms. The liberals can say how they feel about anything or anyone and it is all right but when a conservative says how he believes, it is another story. It is illegal what the mayor of Boston is doing. Consider the source. The man is ignorant.

I am agree with Chik-a-Filet .. Is just the true about marriage.

Thank you for very well expressed article. We were at Chick fil a twice today and at one, the manager said that they were almost out of food. I love this statement by Steve Robinson, Executive Vice President Marketing. 'The Chick-fil-A culture and service tradition in our restaurants is to treat every person with honor, dignity and respect –regardless of their belief, race, creed, sexual orientation or gender.' Very well said....I will have a #1, extra pickles with sweet tea.

The religious bigotry, especially by political leaders, is appalling! The Constitution means nothing to these people. We shouldn't be surprised.

To the gay man who wrote a very nice letter expounding upon his personal beliefs regarding gay marriage, I just want to say I do have compassion for you. However, you should not feel that you are without hope. God offers you a way out of your despair and hopelessness. Go to his Word, The Holy Bible, and look up everything you can find regarding man with man - vs - man with woman. The world will tell you whatever you want to hear but God will tell you the truth always...because he loves you so. Pray to Him and he will deliver you!

Thank God for Dan Cathy, his family and every single Chick-Fil-A business! My heart is overflowing with joy that so many people believe in the biblical definition of marriage and are supporting not only Chick-Fil-A but other Christian businesses as well!! Let's be sure and vote for a President that has biblical morals too in November!!!

It does my spirit good to know that the Christian community is standing up for the biblical stand on marriage. I have gay friends and I've expressed to them that God always loves us but He doesn't always like what we do. You would think that they would get up set and stop talking to me but it is just the opposite, they love to hear me talk about the bible and I always keep them in prayer Jesus said and they will know you are My disciples by your love.

Having been made aware - during the past few days - of the issue involving Chick-Fil-A, I have observed a truth that lies deeply embedded in the heart of this matter.......there are multitudes of people who choose to live as though God doesn't exist. I am grieved, more especially in those instances that involve family members. I will continually pray that God will open their eyes and let them see Jesus.

I thank my God for the opportunity to study His Word through the teachings of Precepts For Life Ministry.

The Bible states: God made man in his image. He said to Adam "it is not good for man to be alone" so he gave him a helpmate who was Eve (a woman) why didn't He give Adam another male????

Jeff - Please sincerely cry out to God, He will respond. I know God, and the bible says we should always have an answer for our hope. My answer is, I cried out and He heard me and now we have a wonderful relationship. God loves you Jeff...give God 30 seconds now and ASK!!!

it makes me mad that the christians are trying to tell everyone how to live when they don't follow there own advise -- divorce is ramped in our country and having children and not being willing to support them- quit telling others how to live -- you don't have a clue -
